How much do Indians earn?

My morning was actually quite simple. I was sitting on a chair watching a man repair my Nike bag. The zipper broke, and I really didn’t want to throw it away. While driving the scooter, I found this guy with a sewing machine on the side of the road and asked if he could fix it. He took out the whole zipper, put a new one in, and it works perfectly! He only asked for 100 rupees — so I gave him 150 because he also fixed the pocket bag that was broken. He didn’t even want to take the extra money, but I insisted and left it there.

It’s crazy, 150 rupees is like 1.30 euros. I know I’m in India, but still… it’s so little for such good work. I sew a bit myself back home, so I know the effort that goes into replacing zippers. It made me wonder how much people like him earn in a day, what they can live on, and under what conditions. I wasn’t in a touristic area. I was the only white person there, or as they call us, bidis,  but he did such an amazing job.
